On December 8th Jasmina Catic Successfully defended her PhD project Human Sound Externalization in Reverberant Environments.

While listening through headphones, the sound is usually perceived as coming from inside the head, or “internalized”. This perception is caused by the loss of natural binaural cues. The question of externalization is not only important to improve our fundamental knowledge of the auditory system, but may also have implications for acoustical simulations using headphones and can also lead to improvements in hearing aid technology.  In this Ph.D. project, Jasmina Catic studied the cues required to perceive a sound as “external”, outside of the head, while being presented through headphones.
