On February 27, Søren Fuglsang successfully defended his thesis ‘Characterizing neural mechanisms of attention-driven speech processing’.

Søren Fuglsang successfully defended his thesis ‘Characterizing neural mechanisms of attention-driven speech processing’. The thesis described Søren’s PhD-work conducted within the EU-project COCOHA: Cognitive Control of a Hearing Aid. The aim of the project was to develop methods to decode from EEG brain signals which person a listener is focusing attention to in multi-talker situations for use in potential brain-controlled hearing instruments. Søren investigated neural measures of attention in both older hearing-impaired listeners and in challenging real-world acoustic scenarios, and also explored methods to better decode these brain signals in real-time.

The defense was an engaged and lively discussion between Søren and examiners Prof. Shihab Shamma, Prof. Maarten de Vos and Ass. Prof. Tobias Andersen about a range of topics covered in the PhD-work and about the potential of the proposed hearing technology. Upon conclusion, the committee agreed that the thesis as documented in five journal publications represented work of strong quality, and that the thesis clearly met the standard required for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
