On June 7, Helia Relaño Iborra successfully defended her thesis “Predicting speech perception of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners”.

Helia Relaño Iborra’s thesis presents an original set of three studies that develop and evaluate two different computational models (sEPSMcorr and sCASP) to predict speech intelligibility. This work is complemented by two further speech intelligibility studies (one modelling and the other behavioural) that are included as appendices. Her work meaningfully contributes to our understanding of speech intelligibility and how that can be captured in computational models. It is anticipated that this work will have a substantial impact on the field through its rigorous comparison of models across a range of challenging conditions for speech perception. Her lecture presented the three main studies of her thesis in a manner that was straightforward and easy to follow. Helia Relaño Iborra’s work meaningfully contributes to our understanding of speech intelligibility and how that can be captured in computational models.
